Abstract. The transition toward sustainable development has significantly transformed the tourism industry, particularly through the introduction of environmental certification systems. Green certification programs and eco-labels have become important mechanisms for improving environmental performance, strengthening competitiveness, and increasing the efficiency of tourism enterprises. This study analyzes the role of green certification as a determinant of ecotourism efficiency based on international experience and recent academic literature. The research is based on secondary data analysis and a systematic review of scientific publications issued between 2020 and 2025. The study examines major certification systems, including ISO 14001, Green Key, EU Ecolabel, EarthCheck, and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards. The findings indicate that eco-certified tourism enterprises achieve higher resource efficiency, improved environmental performance, stronger market reputation, and increased attractiveness for environmentally conscious tourists. However, the effectiveness of certification systems depends on transparent standards, institutional support, and consumer awareness. The study proposes policy recommendations to strengthen eco-certification mechanisms and support sustainable tourism development, particularly in emerging tourism destinations.
