Abstract. This article analyzes the role of microfinance in alleviating poverty in Bangladesh, including the activities of institutions providing microfinance services. Particular attention is given to the experience of the “Rural Development Scheme” (RDS) implemented by Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC. RDS is evaluated as one of the earliest Islamic microfinance models that integrates Shari’ah-compliant financial services with rural development objectives. Based on official statistics and recent achievements, the study examines how the program has contributed to expanding financial inclusion, improving the economic opportunities of low-income households, and reducing poverty. Special emphasis is placed on the positive socio-economic outcomes of the scheme for women, who constitute the majority of its clients.
